How Does New Technology Contribute to Increased Distracted Driving?
There are many different kinds of distractions that can affect drivers. Visual distraction involves taking one’s eyes off the road, while manual distraction involves taking one’s hands off the wheel. Cognitive distraction occurs when an individual’s focus is not directly on the act of driving and his or her mind wanders.
All kinds of new technologies have come along that are much more distracting than was the case in the past, when the only distraction was the radio. Text messaging or talking on the phone requires a combination of visual, manual, and cognitive attention from the driver, making these types of distractions particularly dangerous.

Dangerous Activities while Driving
Texting while driving is the most widely reported form of “distracted driving,” but it is not the only one. Talking to passengers in the vehicle, changing radio stations, searching for the phone charger, or putting makeup on are all distractions that can sometimes cause an accident. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has determined that distracted driving accounts for 25 percent of all crashes involving teenage drivers.
Additionally, almost 50 percent of drivers admit to talking on a mobile phone while driving. The law imposes a duty on drivers to be aware of pedestrians nearby and to yield to them when their paths come together. They also need to be constantly aware of what other vehicles on the road are doing.
