It’s easy to get swept up in the beauty of spring, but amidst the blossoms and sunshine, there’s a less cheerful reality at play: the rise of car accidents. Spring is synonymous with more car accidents, but why? Our Cherry Hill accident attorneys are here to get to the bottom of it.

Why Do Car Accidents Increase in Spring?

Constantly fluctuating weather patterns are one of the contributing factors to increased motor vehicle accidents in South Jersey. Spring is notorious for its unpredictable weather patterns, including sudden rain showers, gusty winds, and fluctuating temperatures. These conditions can create hazardous driving environments, leading to an increased risk of accidents.

Road maintenance and construction also play a major role, as more potholes are left from the winter weather conditions and salt on the roads. Not only this, but with the arrival of milder weather, road maintenance, and construction projects kick into high gear. Construction zones introduce new obstacles and altered traffic patterns, increasing the likelihood of collisions. Our local roadways like Route 70, I-295, Route 42, and many other high-traffic roads have undergone extensive projects, which not only cause headaches but lots of motor vehicle accidents.

Two other things that may not be considered include wildlife activity and more driver distractions. Spring marks the awakening of wildlife from hibernation, leading to increased animal activity near roadways. Collisions with animals such as deer can result in serious accidents, especially during dawn and dusk when visibility is reduced. Lastly, with the longer days and brighter sunlight of spring, drivers may become more prone to distractions such as admiring scenery, adjusting sunglasses, or using electronic devices, diverting their attention from the road.

Tips to Avoid Springtime Car Accidents

  • Stay Vigilant: Be alert and attentive while driving, especially in changing weather conditions or near construction zones. Keep your eyes on the road and anticipate potential hazards.
  • Adapt Driving to Weather Conditions: Adjust your driving speed and following distance according to weather conditions. Slow down in rain or fog, and increase your distance from other vehicles to allow for safe braking.
  • Watch for Wildlife: Pay attention to wildlife crossing signs and be cautious when driving through wooded or rural areas, particularly during dawn and dusk. Scan the road ahead and use your high beams when possible to spot animals early.
  • Minimize Distractions: Avoid using electronic devices while driving and refrain from engaging in activities that take your focus away from the road. If necessary, pull over to a safe location to address distractions.
  • Maintain Vehicle Maintenance: Ensure your vehicle is in good working condition by performing regular maintenance checks, including brakes, tires, lights, and windshield wipers. Properly inflated tires and functional brakes are essential for safe driving. A little maintenance now can save you a whole lot of trouble down the road.
